Abstract

The period of the Northern Irish Troubles at the end of the 20th century was the occasion for many artists to voice their feelings. Most of them sought to represent their surrounding world as faithful to reality as possible. Yet, as the last century was coming to an end, and as the peace process was being talked about more vividly, a group of Northern Irish playwrights started to adopt another perspective on the conflict and strived to give it another dimension through their plays. In this paper, I have chosen to resort to Brechtian theory and analyse music in Christina Reid's The Belle of the Belfast City as a means to redefine the identity of Northern Irish drama; and also as a way to give another representation of the Troubles in Ulster as seen through a feminine lens. Music, which cannot be separated from Brecht's art, is also very present in Northern Irish drama as it may dig the division of the population or promote its reconciliation. For Brecht, "songs" belong to a series of devices meant to fragment the play, to create distanciation, two notions that I also intend to examine carefully in this neo-Brechtian play.
